The Century High School Class of 1984 monthly update

Hello Everyone,

I'm sure everyone is making plans for their summer vacations.  I plan on spending my summer here in Silver Spring by the pool.  I'm not a good traveler while I'm pregnant.  If you don't have any plans Roger Palmer has an invitation you might be interested in.  Roger is heading to Costa Rica and New Zealand.  In New Zealand he gets to visit the sites of the filming of The Lord of the Rings.

"This will be our 5th trip to Costa Rica and we are getting to understand the issues well enough to know what data to be studying.  The New Zealand trip is coordinated with the Royal Geographic Society of New Zealand who has lined us up for a party with the US embassy and visits to businesses and classrooms as well as several of the sites for filming the Lord of the Rings!  Anyone is welcome to join us, we've got teachers, college proffs, college students to our own family members joining us. They can send us an email!"  redrog@aol.com

Summer Training in GIS for Educators and Professionals

Learn to use geospatial visual image data from around the world in your classroom!

We are offering several opportunities for teachers to learn how to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GPS, and Remote Sensing in their classrooms this summer. GIS can be used to illustrate concepts in Geography, Demography, Economics, Earth Systems, Mathematics, Agriculture, Chemistry, Physics, Business and Marketing, Conservation and Environmental sciences just to name a few. This field has been labeled as one of three of the hottest new job markets by the Department of Labor. Over 3,000 universities in 70 different disciplines have adopted GIS as part of their requirements to graduate. Over the past several years geospatial industries have grown from a 3 billion to 21 billion dollar per year industry. Using GIS in the classroom can revolutionize the way students see patterns in data and get the big picture of concepts that are difficult to understand.

Join us this summer for international travel while learning GIS.

BISMARCK NEWS

** I could use some help here.  Send me any interesting news from Bismarck.  New stores, restaurants.  Are the old hang outs still there!

CHS HAPPENINGS
Century cleaned up at the State Journalism competition.  They won Best Yearbook in the State, The Century Star Editor won ND Journalist of the year and their advisor Scott Winter won ND Journalism Advisor of the Year.  I believe Scott is the son of Abe Winter.  Abe used to be a sports writer for the Bismarck Tribune.  They also won a lot of other awards.  Too many to mention.

** If you know how the sports teams are doing please pass it on.  Or any other CHS news **
